LO2: Social Media, Globalisation and Moral Panic

Moral Panic: Stanley Cohen, panic in the press about the negative impact something has on a section of society. The thing which has an impact on society is called a "folk devil".

New Technologies:

• These are seen as a moral panic as people think it is making people anti-social rather than social.
• Features such as "snapmap" can put children in danger if they have people who they do not know on their snapchat.
• Children are no longer going outside to play and are instead playing inside on their phones 
• People are being put into danger by meeting people from online accounts. 
• Instagram bloggers putting pressure of teens to look a certain way 
• Trolling on social media (specifically on twitter) 
• explicit images being sent via social media.
• access to online grooming or harmful content.
